Pure Studios Performing Arts: Bronze Modern Syllabus 2023-2024

​

Class Content:

Bronze Modern is an introductory and beginning level course. Students will learn and execute the basic fundamental skills prevalent in core modern dance techniques including the Horton, Graham, and Limon techniques in addition to developing their artistic and performance skills. Class will consist of a thorough warm-up of the entire body, stationary and locomotive exercises in technique, and occasional artistic choreographic combinations that challenge the artists within a reasonable degree of difficulty.

Pre-Requisites: None

​

Upon completion of this class, artist should be knowledgeable of and able to perform these skills:

  • Basic articulations of the spine

  • Basic linear and curved shapes of the body

  • Basic Spiraled shapes of the body

  • Tracking of the knees in parallel and rotated positions of the legs

  • Basic understanding of expansion/contraction concepts

  • Beginning level flat-backs

  • Single-armed laterals

  • High Lateral and High Diagonal positions

  • Side Pulls and Diagonal Pulls

  • Single pencil turns

  • Prances (standing and jumping)

  • Triplets

  • Tuck Jumps

  • Beginning level release swings

  • Open and closed Egyptian positions

  • Two-Handed inversions

  • Basic understanding of moving the body in and out of the floor from various positions

  • Basic understanding of various dynamic qualities of the body (sharp, soft, etc.)

  • Basic understanding of the use of breath in tandem with movement

  • Coordination of arms and legs in opposition

  • Basic musicality (identifying downbeat)

Attire: Hair pulled neatly away from face, black leotard, pink or black tights OR black biker shorts or leggings.

Pure Studios Performing Arts: Silver Modern Syllabus 2023-2024

Class Content:

Silver Modern is an introductory and beginning/intermediate level course. Students will learn and execute the basic and intermediate fundamental skills prevalent in core modern dance techniques including the Horton, Graham, and Limon techniques in addition to developing their artistic and performance skills. Class will consist of a thorough warm-up of the entire body, stationary and locomotive exercises in technique, and occasional artistic choreographic combinations that challenge the artists within a reasonable degree of difficulty.

Pre-Requisites: Bronze Modern or comparable prior training. Admittance into Silver Modern is contingent upon the artist’s ability to safely, confidently, and correctly execute all skills learned in Bronze Modern to a reasonable degree.

​

Upon completion of this class, artist should be knowledgeable of and able to perform these skills:

  • Expansion of all skills covered in Bronze Modern

  • Intermediate flat-back variations

  • Laterals with both arms raised

  • Intermediate release swing variations

  • Leg swings

  • Basic triplet variations

  • Lateral T position

  • Figure 4 position

  • Single-leg balances

  • Grand Jetes

  • Basic rolls into the floor on bottom and stomach

  • Development of muscular isolations throughout the body

  • Rhythmic identification and musical counting ability

Class Content:

Gold Modern is an intermediate/advanced level course. Students will learn and execute intermediate and complex skills prevalent in core modern dance techniques including the Horton, Graham, and Limon techniques in addition to developing their artistic and performance skills. Class will consist of a thorough warm-up of the entire body, stationary and locomotive exercises in technique, and occasional artistic choreographic combinations that challenge the artists within a reasonable degree of difficulty.

Pre-Requisites: Silver Modern or comparable prior training. Admittance into Gold Modern is contingent upon the artist’s ability to safely, confidently, and correctly execute all skills learned in Silver Modern to a reasonable degree.

 

Upon completion of this class, artist should be knowledgeable of and able to perform these skills:

  • Expansion of all skills covered in Silver Modern

  • Intermediate/advanced flat-back variations

  • Lateral to flat-back transitions

  • Intermediate/advanced release swing variations

  • Standing leg swings

  • Spiral sits

  • Double pencil turns

  • Single turns in Figure 4

  • Front T position

  • Extended and bent table positions

  • Stag position

  • Tilts

  • Various split-leg jumps

  • Side Falls

  • Single-handed inversions

  • Introductory understanding of under-curves and over-curves

  • Introductory understanding of fall and recovery

  • Intermediate understanding of moving the body in and out of floorwork

  • Intermediate understanding of expansion/contraction concepts

  • Intermediate understanding of the different dynamics of the body (sharp, soft, etc.)

Class Content:

Platinum Modern is an advanced level course. Students will learn and execute the complex and technically challenging skills prevalent in core modern dance techniques including the Horton, Graham, and Limon techniques in addition to developing their artistic and performance skills. Class will consist of a thorough warm-up of the entire body, stationary and locomotive exercises in technique, and occasional artistic choreographic combinations that challenge the artists within a reasonable degree of difficulty.

 

Pre-Requisites: Gold Modern or comparable prior training. Admittance into Platinum Modern is contingent upon the artist’s ability to safely, confidently, and correctly execute all skills learned in Silver Modern to a reasonable degree.

Upon completion of this class, artist should be knowledgeable of and able to perform these skills:

  • Expansion of all skills covered in Bronze, Silver, and Gold Modern

  • Advanced flat-back variations

  • Advanced lateral transitions

  • Advanced release swing variations including lateral release swings

  • Initiating movement from the core

  • Pitch turns

  • Strikes in various positions

  • Single turns and promenades in Lateral T

  • Double turns in Figure 4

  • Side Successions

  • Ability to take the body on and off balance at will

  • Efficient and timely transitions between contrasting movements

  • Advanced understanding of coordinating oppositional movements

  • Advanced understanding of under-curves and over-curves

  • Advanced understanding of fall and recovery, moving in and out of the floor with ease

  • Advanced understanding of the dynamic range of the body with quality, energy, and timing

  • Application of technical ability in non-technical movements

  • Application of artistic and performative choices in class
